US dollar may lose world’s currency status

After the beginning of the military conflict in Eastern Europe, the US in alliance with Europe introduced harmful sanctions against Russia. However, it turned out that the US dollar may cease to be a global currency as the heavily sanctioned Russian economy proved to be more resilient than one could imagine. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Congresswoman representing Georgia, said on Twitter that the US dollar may lose its status as the world’s currency. She noted that sanctions backlashed and hurt the national currency instead of hitting Russia’s economy. "Heavily sanctioned Russia is proving to the world that they don’t need the US dollar or friendship to trade and thrive," the congresswoman tweeted. Imposed restrictions do not cut Russia from international trade. Moreover, some of its partners conduct transactions in national currencies. Many countries are monitoring the situation and starting to question the dominance of the US dollar in international payments. Commenting on the US government’s actions, Greene pinpointed that the conflict in Ukraine was draining military resources, driving inflation in the US, and hurting world trade. "It could also result in the dollar no longer being the world’s currency. Because of our own arrogance and ‘fight to save democracy’ in non-NATO Ukraine," she stressed. In addition, she urged the US authorities to end the conflict in Ukraine immediately and opposed the allocation of billions of dollars to help Kyiv.
