Reuters reported the euro should have a bigger role in international trade citing Christophe de Margerie, the chief executive of the French oil giant Total. The high-ranking official said, "There is no reason to pay for oil in dollars." He noted the fact that oil prices are quoted in dollars per barrel, however it does not mean that payments actually have to be made in that currency. "Doing without the U.S. dollar wouldn't be realistic, but it would be good if the euro was used more," Total’s CEO stated. Earlier, France’s Finance Minister Michel Sapin announced that euro zone finance ministers would discuss ways of boosting use of the euro in international trade at their next monthly meeting.
