According to Frans Timmermans, the commissioner in charge of the European Green Deal, the only way for Europe to increase its energy security is to focus on alternative sources. Achieving full energy independence from Russia must be a top priority for the EU countries. To reach this goal, the bloc members need to speed up the transition to green energy. “It is time we tackle our vulnerabilities and rapidly become more independent in our energy choices. Let's dash into renewable energy at lightning speed,” Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal said. The official believes that the EU can only go with renewables from now on as it has very little coal and gas left. Besides, oil supplies are also limited now. Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson reported earlier that the EU had stopped buying Russian coal and eliminated 90% of Russia’s oil imports. In addition, pipeline gas supplies dropped significantly.
