In five years from now, whiskey is likely to become the second most popular alcoholic beverage after Russian vodka. According to experts, world sales of whiskey will come in at 3.481 billion liters in 2018 that is 17% more than in 2013. In the meantime, the volume of vodka will have fallen to 3.428 billion liters losing 0.8%.
Whiskey has been gaining ground for the last several years. The fastest sales dynamic is scored among not American or Scotch manufacturers, but Indian ones. Drinks International reports that for the period from 2009 to 2013, the sales of the Indian whiskey named Officer’s Choice surged by 15%, McDowell’s No.1 inched up 12%, and Royal Stag climbed 11.8%. All the while, Scottish Johnnie Walker ticked up only 5.6%. Last year, the whiskey sales in Russia exceeded 10 million liters and the total turnover posted 8 million rubles.
Fake brands of alcoholic beverages bottled on illegal factories explain why it happens. Such products are sold even in expensive liquor stores. As for vodka production, it sank by 16.9% in January-March 2014 compared to the same period last year. As a result, federal revenues from excise taxes on vodka and cognac produced in Russia lost 5% on a yearly basis and 6.3% month-over-months.
