US Treasury Secretary: US-China relations on 'surer footing'

Trade wars and various kinds of sanctions are not a reason to spoil relations, US authorities are confident. Guided by this principle, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen described Sino-US relations as quite strong and expressed hope for further strengthening of trade ties between the world’s two largest economies.

The recent trip of Janet Yellen to China has been an excellent opportunity to assess relations between the countries. Despite long-simmering tensions, the parties are reportedly eager to work on areas of mutual interest and bridge the differences, especially over trade. "Broadly speaking, I believe that my bilateral meetings – which totaled about 10 hours over two days – served as a step forward in our effort to put the US-China relationship on surer footing," the US Treasury Secretary said. Although Washington and Beijing have significant disagreements, they need to take a step forward in establishing and deepening relations, she added.

"Both nations have an obligation to responsibly manage this relationship: to find a way to live together and share in global prosperity," Yellen pointed out.

The head of the US Treasury Department called the talks in Beijing "direct, substantive, and productive." She assumed that her visit to the country would "help build a resilient and productive channel of communication with China's new economic team." According to Yellen, negotiations are "part of a broader concerted effort to stabilize the relationship, reduce the risk of misunderstanding, and discuss areas of cooperation," including the ways to combat Russia’s efforts to evade sanctions.
