The sanctions imposed against Russia by the United States would have a serious negative impact on relationships between the two nations.
'Sanctions are bound to have a boomerang effect and, in this case, will undoubtedly lead Russian-American relations to a dead end and deal a very serious blow,' Putin said. The Russian leader noted that sanctions against Russia are going to harm strategic interests of the United States. “It is a pity that our partners will go on this way. But we have not closed the door to the negotiation process to get out of this situation.” Moreover, Russia’s President highlighted that both American and Russian companies would suffer. “The measures being taken by the U.S. administration, in my view, contradict the national interests of the United States. Large companies want to work in Russia, but, facing certain restrictions, they will lose their competitiveness compared to other global energy companies,” he said citing Exxon Mobil Corp which was given the opportunity to operate in Russia. So, Putin stressed that the government is causing damage to their own major energy companies. For context, the United States announced additional sanctions against Russia on July 17. The penalties are applied to individuals and companies both in Russia and Ukraine. The sanctions are imposed on the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic. Companies on the list are Russian state corporation Vnesheconombank (VEB), Gazprombank, Rosneft, Defense Concern Almaz-Antey, weapons manufacturer Kalashnikov Consortium, KBP Instrument Design Bureau, Research and Production Corporation Uralvagonzavod and Russia’s largest independent gas producer Novatek.
