Facebook now owns Oculus VR which specializes in developing and producing virtual reality headsets. The Facebook management announced that the $2-billion acquisition would be closed after the deal is approved by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. The social network is paying $400 million in cash plus $23.1 million in Facebook shares for the virtual headset producer. Moreover, the Oculus Rift producer might be able to raise $300 million in incentives if it hits certain milestones in the future. “At this point we feel we're in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences. This is where Oculus comes in. They build virtual reality technology, like the Oculus Rift headset. When you put it on, you enter a completely immersive computer-generated environment, like a game or a movie scene or a place far away,” Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook founder and CEO, wrote in a status update as the acquisition was unveiled in March. As for Oculus VR, the company was founded by Palmer Luckey when he was just 21. The young entrepreneur started his carrier fixing iPhones. He managed to earn $2.4 million, the startup capital to found Oculus VR, creating a crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. Meanwhile, Oculus VR has sold over 75,000 headsets at $350 apiece to game developers, but the company has not announced yet when it will release a version to the public. It should be reminded that it has been the second multi-billion purchase of Facebook in 2014. Earlier, the company stated it would buy WhatsApp, a mobile messaging app, for $19 billion plus as much as $4 billion in future payouts. Besides, in 2012 Facebook paid $1 billion for Instagram, an online mobile photo-sharing and video-sharing service.
