Japanese e-commerce platform Mercari introduces Bitcoin payments

Japanese leading e-commerce platform Mercari believes that integrating Bitcoin as a payment method will enhance the company's reputation and ensure financial success. Currently boasting over 22 million active users, the e-commerce giant is gearing up to allow users to make purchases using Bitcoin. The implementation of this initiative is slated for June 2024. Payments in BTC are expected to be facilitated by Mercari's dedicated crypto exchange, Mercoin. Acting as an intermediary, Mercoin will convert cryptocurrencies to yen for sellers with a transaction fee applied. Prices will still be displayed in yen but platform users will have the option to make payments using Bitcoin. In March 2023, Mercari ventured into the Bitcoin market by launching its own cryptocurrency exchange. The platform enables users to acquire cryptocurrencies seamlessly through the app, utilizing the balance from their bank accounts. Additionally, Mercari users receive complimentary points earned from selling items on the platform. According to a recent financial report, Mercari recorded a profit of ¥2.8 billion ($19.4 million) in the third quarter of 2023, a substantial increase compared to the same period in 2022 (¥555 million). The company's revenue for the third quarter of last year reached ¥44.27 billion, surpassing the previous value by 11.2%.
