Russia has banned Great Britain from fishing on its territory. The State Duma has reportedly canceled the agreement with Great Britain on fishing in the Barents Sea, signed in May 1956. According to Maxim Uvaidov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, the document allowed British trawlers to fish in the waters of the Barents Sea, along the coast of the Kola Peninsula and Kolguyev Island. The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation notes that thanks to this agreement, the UK caught more than 500,000 tons of fish last year. The decision to cancel this document was taken after the British authorities denied Russia access to Most Favoured Nation status. In March 2023, the UK imposed a 35% tariff uplift on goods imported from Russia. According to the Russian government, this decision will not lead to serious foreign policy and economic shocks for the country. Against this background, economists fear that UK residents may be left without their favorite dish - fish and chips, as local companies catch huge quantities of haddock and cod in Russian territorial waters. In the summer of 2022, Boris Johnson, acting Prime Minister of Great Britain, urged fish and chips sellers to refuse fish caught on the territory of Russia.
