Indonesian Trade Surplus Falls To $3.1 Bln

Indonesia's foreign trade surplus decreased in August from a year ago as exports fell faster than imports, figures from Statistics Indonesia showed on Friday.

The trade surplus shrank to $3.1 billion in August from $5.8 billion in the same month last year.

Economists had expected a surplus of $1.55 billion. In July, the surplus was $1.29 billion.

Exports logged a double-digit annual decrease of 21.12 percent in August, versus an expected fall of 22.0 percent. The decline was largely attributed to lower overseas demand for non-oil and gas.

Imports declined 14.77 percent from last year, which was worse than the 9.33 percent fall expected by economists.

On a monthly basis, exports showed an increase of 5.47 percent, while imports were 3.53 percent lower.
