Apple Introduces New IPhone Features In EU

Apple Inc. has announced major updates to its iOS, Safari and the App Store for users in the European Union (EU) in line with the requirements of the Digital Markets Act. These developments, set to roll out to EU users in March 2024, encompass over 600 brand-new APIs, enhanced app analytics and additional features for alternative browser engines. The modifications also extend to alternative methods of processing app payments and distributing iOS applications.

For the first time, Apple will allow downloads of third-party app stores not exclusively from Apple's own platform. In addition, third-party applications installed will be granted the permission to download other apps on devices operating on iOS version 17.4.

However, there is a clause: once a third-party app garners one million installations in a year, the developer will have to pay 0.50 euros for each subsequent app installation.

Apple also plans to reduce its in-app transaction fee rates. For transactions associated with digital goods and services, the charge will be reduced from 30 percent to 17 percent. Developers eligible under select discounted programs will also benefit as the rates will cut down from 15 percent to 10 percent.

Notably, users will have the option to use payment methods other than those provided by Apple, with the company choosing not to levy a commission for these transactions.

This decision mirrors recent actions in the United States. Last week, Apple declared it would facilitate alternative payment methods whilst continuing to apply a commission charge of up to 27 percent.
