Eurozone Economic Sentiment Falls Slightly

The economic sentiment in the Eurozone experienced a slight dip in January, according to the monthly survey data released by the European Commission on Tuesday. The economic sentiment index was reported to be 96.2 in January, meeting expectations but showing a decline from December's 96.3.

There was an increase in confidence within industry and services, however, this was counterbalanced by a decrease in retailer, construction, and consumer sentiment. The industrial confidence index rose marginally from -9.6 in the previous month to -9.4. The services sentiment index also increased, moving to 8.8 from 8.4 a month prior.

Conversely, the consumer sentiment index fell to -16.1, which was in line with the flash estimate and down from -15.1 in December. Confidence among retailers, as well as sentiment among contractors, also experienced a decline in January. The retail trade sentiment index reported a figure of -5.6, down from -5.4 in the preceding month. Similarly, the construction confidence index fell sharply, registering at -4.3 from -3.4.

The data also revealed that the employment expectations indicator worsened in January, dropping to 102.5 from 103.3 in December.
