Duke Energy Florida To File For New Base Rates

Duke Energy Florida has announced its plan to submit a rate case to the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) this coming April. This proposed rate case will seek to finance the introduction of measures intended to enhance the efficiency of their energy generation units, scale down the frequency of power outages, and increase solar generation capacity. If the proposal is granted, the boosted base rates would commence in January 2025.

In their proposal, Duke Energy Florida is advocating for an approximate increase of 4% in the average annual base rate from 2025 to 2027. Despite this, they anticipate an overall decrease in customer bills come 2025. This is due to the eventual expiry of the 2022 fuel under-recovery, storm restoration costs, and legacy purchased power contracts at the end of 2024. With these burdens lifted, the company predicts a net decrease in customer bills for the year 2025.

Melissa Seixas, the state president of Duke Energy Florida, stated that this proposal is the company's response to their customers' growing demand for a more reliable and cleaner energy system. The company aims to utilize innovative technology to optimize the efficiency of their power plants and to reduce the occurrence of power outages.
