Consumer price inflation in Austria eased in January, reaching its lowest point in just over two years according to an early estimate from Statistics Austria released on Thursday. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 4.5 percent year-over-year in January, marking a slowdown from December's 5.6 percent rise. This represents the most moderate inflation rate since December 2021.
The deceleration in inflation reported can be largely attributed to the decrease in household energy costs, particularly electricity charges, according to the agency. When viewed on a month-to-month basis, consumer prices declined by 0.2 percent in January.
In other findings, the EU's Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), also indicated a more restrained rate of increase at 4.3 percent compared to December's 5.7 percent. On a monthly basis, the HICP experienced a decline of 0.4 percent.
