Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has unveiled the "AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe," a project aimed at providing AI skills training to individuals within Europe. Google has set aside a fund of 25 million euros ($26.9 million) to support this initiative.
The overarching goal of this project is to harness the vast AI opportunities present in Europe, a region famously positioned to dominantly sway in this field. To achieve this, Google has forged partnerships with European Union governments, civil society, academics, and businesses. This collaboration aims to offer advanced AI training to local startups and marginalized communities facing the risks of being marginalized due to increasing AI application in the workplace.
This new AI initiative builds on Google's prior project, aptly named "Grow with Google." This project was centered around offering free training to close the digital skills gap within EU. The AI programs within the new project will focus on training professionals on how to apply AI in workplace situations.
Google has opened applications for social enterprises and nonprofits that can help reach those most likely to benefit from the training. Selected organizations will receive customized training on AI fundamentals. Additionally, Google has broadened the reach of its AI fundamental course to 18 languages and improved the Google Career Certificates program to offer practical experience in applying AI in professional scenarios.
To aid in finding social enterprises and nonprofits best suited to reach out to those who would benefit from the training, Google has primarily partnered with the Centre for Public Impact. Adrian Brown, executive director of the Centre for Public Impact, opines that this program will aid Europeans in enhancing their knowledge, skills, and confidence with regards to AI, making sure no one is left aside.
