Australia Retail Sales Rise 1.1% In January

In the month of January, Australia saw a seasonally adjusted increase in the total value of retail sales, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The value rose by 1.1 percent, hitting A$35.723 billion. However, this did not meet the anticipated increase of 1.6 percent, as it follows a 2.7 percent decrease in December.

A closer look at individual sectors sees growth in various areas. Household goods sales increased by 2.3 percent, clothing sales by 2.4 percent, department stores and other sectors collectively by 1.7 percent, and cafes and restaurants by 1.3 percent. On the other hand, food retailing experienced a slight dip of 0.1 percent.

Geographically, every territory in Australia experienced an uptick in sales.
