Japan Govt Mulls Declaring End To Deflation - Kyodo

According to Kyodo news agency, the Japanese government has initiated talks to formally announce the termination of deflation, citing insiders. This decision will hinge on a close inspection of the results of this spring's wage negotiations as well as projections for inflation.

The expectation is that formally ending deflation will stimulate economic growth in Japan. As prices have been on the rise, there have been increased demands for larger wage increases than those seen last year.

Senior members of the government, either Prime Minister Fumio Kishida or members of his Cabinet, are poised to officially make the announcement. Alternatively, the communication may be included in the government's monthly economic bulletin.

Last week, Hajime Takata, a policymaker at the Bank of Japan, said the central bank might contemplate winding down its expansive monetary policy, given that the 2% price target seems within reach. Nevertheless, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda advised caution, stating it was premature to claim the inflation target had been reached. Ueda called for compelling evidence of robust wage growth leading to increases in price and pay. The results of recent annual wage negotiations may shed light on future trends.

In February, the Japanese government downgraded its economic outlook for the first time in three months due to declining consumer spending and industrial production. The Cabinet Office noted in its monthly report that while the Japanese economy has been recovering steadily, it seemed to be plateauing recently.

Following the release of data revealing entry into a recession in the fourth quarter of 2023, Japan has forfeited its position as the world's third-largest economy. The data showed a 0.4% drop in GDP from the previous year, following a 2.9% contraction in the third quarter.
