The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that retail sales in the UK saw no change in February. Following a revised 3.6% increase in January, predictions had forecast a 0.4% decrease in sales for the subsequent month.
Certain sectors, such as clothing and department stores, experienced sales growth due to new collections. However, this was counteracted by declines in food stores and fuel retailers.
If one does not consider auto fuel, the monthly retail sales volume displayed a more modest increase of 0.2%, coming down from January's climb of 3.4%.
Comparing year by year, overall retail sales witnessed a downfall of 0.4%, contradictory to the previous increase of 0.5%. Here too, the market had anticipated a more significant drop of 0.7%.
Similarly, when auto fuel sales are excluded, there was a 0.5% decrease in retail sales, nullifying the growth seen in the previous month. This situation exceeded economists' expectations, who had forecast an annual fall of 0.9%.
