Amazon Achieves 100% Renewable Energy Goal Seven Years Early

In 2023, Amazon (AMZN) achieved its 100 percent renewable energy target, originally set for 2030, as detailed in the company's Sustainability Report for the year.

"By reaching this milestone, Amazon has facilitated the construction of hundreds of new solar and wind projects, introducing new sources of clean energy to grids and communities worldwide," stated Kyle Harrison, head of sustainability research at BloombergNEF. BloombergNEF reports that the e-commerce giant has invested billions of dollars in over 500 solar and wind initiatives globally.

"Addressing climate change while meeting society's increasing energy demands is a significant challenge. Amazon's dedication to clean power exemplifies how a single company can accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy on a global scale," Harrison added.

The report highlighted that Amazon achieved a 3 percent reduction in its carbon footprint and a 13 percent decrease in carbon intensity in 2023. Additionally, the company launched the Amazon Sustainability Exchange to assist other corporations in achieving net-zero emissions.

Amazon also detailed the deployment of more than 24,000 electric vehicles globally, ensuring timely deliveries with reduced carbon emissions.

"Reaching our renewable energy goal is a remarkable accomplishment, and we're proud to have achieved it seven years ahead of schedule. However, we recognize that this is only a moment in time, and our efforts to decarbonize our operations will continue to evolve each year," said Kara Hurst, Amazon's Chief Sustainability Officer.

"Our teams will remain ambitious and committed to doing what is right for our business, our customers, and the planet. We will continue to invest in solar and wind projects, as well as support other forms of carbon-free energy such as nuclear, battery storage, and emerging technologies that can power our operations for decades to come," Hurst concluded.
