In July, the growth of the UK's service sector gained momentum as demand surged at the fastest pace observed in over a year, according to the final survey data released by S&P Global on Monday.
The S&P Global Services Purchasing Managers' Index increased to 52.5 in July from 52.1 in June, slightly above the initial flash estimate of 52.4.
Marking its ninth consecutive month above the 50.0 threshold, the index's July reading indicated the first acceleration in growth since April.
New orders experienced the strongest growth in fourteen months, driven by robust demand conditions. Foreign demand also showed positive trends, with companies reporting an uptick in new business from Europe, North America, and Asia.
In response to the rising demand, firms continued to expand their workforce, achieving the highest rate of job creation since June of the previous year.
Despite persistent price pressures across the UK services sector, the rates of inflation for both input prices and output charges were among the lowest seen in approximately three and a half years. The overall cost inflation stemmed from increased expenses related to transportation, IT services, wages, and supplier fees.
UK service providers conveyed a positive outlook for business confidence in July. The future activity index rebounded to a five-month high, recovering from June's low. The anticipated end of the 2024 general election period contributed to greater political certainty, thereby fostering optimism.
The composite output index climbed to 52.8 in July from 52.3 in June, reflecting a moderate and slightly accelerated expansion in private sector economic activity.
