UK Jobless Rate Falls Unexpectedly

The United Kingdom's unemployment rate experienced a surprising decline in the second quarter, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics on Tuesday.

In the three months leading up to June, the unemployment rate dropped to 4.2 percent, defying expectations that it would rise slightly to 4.5 percent from the 4.4 percent recorded in the previous period.

Excluding bonuses, average earnings increased by 5.4 percent compared to the previous year, which is a deceleration from the 5.8 percent growth observed in the prior period. Analysts had anticipated the growth rate to slow to 4.6 percent.

Simultaneously, average earnings, including bonuses, rose by 4.5 percent, as indicated in the data.

In July, the number of payrolled employees saw an increase of 24,000, reaching a total of 30.4 million. This comes after a rise of 14,000 in June.

Vacancies declined for the 25th consecutive period in the three months to July, with the number of vacancies falling by 26,000 to 884,000 in the quarter.

Additionally, the data highlighted that approximately 100,000 working days were lost due to labor disputes in June, with the majority of strikes occurring in the health and social work sectors.
