Switzerland saw an unexpected and significant rise in industrial production during the second quarter, according to provisional data released Friday by the Federal Statistical Office.
Industrial production soared 7.3% year-over-year in the second quarter, reversing a 2.0% decline in the first quarter. Notably, this marks the largest increase since the first quarter of 2021, when production also climbed by 7.3%.
Output in the manufacturing sector increased by 6.8% compared to the previous year, following a 3.2% decrease in the prior quarter. Mining production rose by 1.2%, in contrast to the 1.0% decline seen in the preceding three-month period. Additionally, the electricity supply segment experienced robust growth, expanding by 12.5%.
Production in the secondary sector, which includes both industry and construction, recovered by 6.4% on an annual basis in the June quarter, after a 2.4% decrease in the first quarter. The construction output trend also reversed, advancing by 0.8% year-over-year in the second quarter after experiencing a 2.9% decline in the previous three months.
For June, industrial production expanded by 5.6% annually, down from an 8.6% increase the previous month.
