Apple Introduces New Hearing Aid Features For AirPods Pro 2

Apple has taken a significant leap into the Over-The-Counter (OTC) hearing aid market by introducing a software upgrade for its latest AirPods Pro 2 earbuds. This innovative update allows users to conduct a hearing test and utilize the earbuds as OTC hearing aids for those experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss.

The company is optimistic that these features will soon obtain marketing authorization from global health authorities. The anticipated launch is set for this fall, spanning more than 100 countries, including the United States, Germany, and Japan.

Moreover, Apple has assured that these new health features will be compatible not only with the latest hardware but also with previously sold Apple devices. To activate the hearing aid feature, users must have mild to moderate hearing loss, although the app does not require an official diagnosis. Users can also upload results from external tests. The interactive hearing test guides users through listening to various sounds and following on-screen prompts to provide feedback. The results, including an audiogram and a numerical representation of hearing loss in each ear, can then be accessed via the iPhone Health app.

It should be noted that the hearing aid feature will not be accessible to individuals without hearing loss or those with severe to profound hearing impairment. The app will advise these users to consult a hearing specialist. Additionally, the AirPods Pro 2 offers a hearing protection feature designed to minimize exposure to background noise, which can worsen the effects of using headphones and earbuds.

Dr. Sujana Chandrasekhar, an otologist and neurotologist at Mount Sinai, highlighted ongoing challenges within the hearing health community. She pointed out that many individuals who could benefit from OTC hearing aids are not utilizing them. Untreated hearing loss has been linked to social isolation, which can result in depression and potentially dementia. "Apple's AirPods could bridge this gap. They provide a hearing test and amplify where it's needed. And since everyone commonly uses earbuds, you won't appear to be wearing a hearing aid. So, these devices bypass all those hurdles," she noted.
