Nokia, Windstream, And Colt Complete First 800GbE Trial Linking London And Chicago

Nokia, Windstream Wholesale, and Colt Technology Services have achieved a pioneering milestone with the completion of an 800 Gigabit Ethernet (800GbE) service trial. Unveiled as the world’s first of its kind, this connection extends over 8,500 kilometers, utilizing a blend of subsea and terrestrial routes within an operational network. The trial showcased the utilization of cutting-edge power-efficient networking technologies from the trio of companies, furthering the capabilities in wavelength, capacity, speed, and latency improvement between two major global financial trading centers, according to Nokia's announcement on Monday.

The trial effectively linked one of Colt's robust transatlantic subsea cables with its expansive terrestrial fiber optic infrastructure, alongside leveraging Windstream Wholesale's domestic low-latency optical fiber Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON) to assess speed and performance metrics.

In their joint efforts, Colt and Windstream Wholesale executed the world's first seamless end-to-end 800 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) transoceanic service transport from router to router. This monumental achievement harnessed over 1 Tbps of optical transport, made feasible by Nokia's state-of-the-art sixth-generation Photonic Service Engine (PSE-6s) coherent optics and the high-performance routing capabilities of the 7750 Service Router, which significantly bolster internet service speeds and support ultra-high wavelength capacity.
