Eurozone Industrial Output Recovers In August

Eurozone industrial production saw a resurgence in August, driven primarily by an upswing in capital and durable consumer goods output, as revealed by Eurostat data released on Tuesday.

In August, industrial output rose by 1.8 percent month-over-month, successfully overturning a 0.5 percent decline noted in July. This growth aligned with prior expectations.

Despite this notable increase, the most significant in over a year, Elias Hilmer, an economist with Capital Economics, cautions against viewing it as the onset of a sustained recovery. Hilmer suggests that production levels may decrease as the year progresses.

Bert Colijn, an economist at ING, remarks that the inventory cycle improvements may be more pertinent in the coming year. For the manufacturing sector, this implies that a sustained recovery is unlikely to commence before 2025, according to Colijn.

The production of capital goods rose by 3.7 percent, effectively negating the previous month's 1.3 percent decline. Durable consumer goods also saw a 1.7 percent increase after experiencing a 3.1 percent drop.

Similarly, energy production increased by 0.4 percent, reversing a 0.2 percent decline in July. The downturn in intermediate goods output eased to 0.3 percent from a previous 1.3 percent.

Conversely, growth in non-durable consumer goods output decelerated, softening to 0.2 percent from a previous 1.8 percent.

On an annual basis, euro area industrial output unexpectedly rose by 0.1 percent, following a 2.1 percent decline observed in July. Economists had initially predicted a monthly decrease of 1.2 percent.

In the European Union (EU27), industrial production increased by 1.3 percent month-over-month in August and registered a 0.2 percent rise compared to the same period last year.
