BAE Systems Awarded Up To $460 Million U.S. Army Contract For Multi-mode Aviation Radio Set

BAE Systems plc (BA.L) has secured a five-year contract with the U.S. Army valued at up to $460 million for the AN/ARC-231/A Multi-mode Aviation Radio Set (MARS). This indefinite delivery and quantity agreement encompasses a range of services and components, including hardware, repair services, engineering and logistical support, as well as development for rotary-wing aircraft.

The MARS system is engineered to operate under the most challenging conditions, delivering secure, critical information to military personnel when needed. Its programmability allows for rapid adaptation to evolving communication requirements, special missions, and upgrades for improved performance. The system’s software communications architecture and software-defined radio design facilitate the introduction of new capabilities through software-only updates.

The AN/ARC-231A MARS is equipped with the RT-1987 radio and a suite of supporting ancillaries like amplifiers and mounting bases. It represents the latest generation in multi-band, multi-mission airborne communication systems, featuring advanced Type 1 Cryptographic Modernization.

Offered through foreign military sales, the system ensures compliance with international air traffic control standards while providing comprehensive U.S. and NATO communication capabilities. Production and development of these radios will take place at BAE Systems' facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with engineering support managed from Largo, Florida.
