Rio Tinto Q3 Pilbara Iron Ore Shipments Up 1%; Backs FY Pilbara Iron Ore Shipments Outlook

Rio Tinto Plc, the prominent Anglo-Australian mining conglomerate, has shared its third-quarter statistics, revealing that Pilbara iron ore shipments reached 84.5 million tonnes, with Rio Tinto's share recorded at 72.5 million tonnes. This represents a 1% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Looking ahead to 2024, the projected Pilbara iron ore shipments are anticipated to remain steady within the range of 323 to 338 million tonnes.

The company reaffirmed its strategic goal to enhance overall copper equivalent production by approximately 3% in compound annual growth rate from 2024 through 2028. This growth is expected from its present portfolio and ongoing projects, taking into account long-term market pricing consensus.

In the Pilbara region, Rio Tinto's production output was 84.1 million tonnes in the third quarter, with a personal share of 71.0 million tonnes, marking a 1% rise from the previous year. The rise in productivity is effectively counteracting resource depletion.

Bauxite production saw an 8% increase, reaching 15.1 million tonnes, attributable to increased plant availability and utilization, thanks to the integration of the Safe Production System. This improvement is particularly evident at the Amrun mine in Weipa, which is now operating beyond its nameplate capacity.

Conversely, aluminium production witnessed a 2% decline compared to the third quarter of 2023, totaling 0.8 million tonnes. This decrease largely stems from the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter (NZAS), which faced an operational constraint after Meridian Energy requested a reduction in electricity consumption by 185 MW starting in early August.
