FTSE 100 Gains As Inflation Hits Three-year Low

On Wednesday, U.K. stocks experienced an uptick following the release of official data indicating that U.K. inflation had dropped below the 2 percent target. This figure marks the lowest inflation level in over three years as of September, intensifying calls for the Bank of England to consider easing its policy at the upcoming November meeting.

According to the Office for National Statistics, consumer price inflation decreased more than anticipated, falling to 1.7 percent in September from 2.2 percent in August. This represents the lowest rate since April 2021, falling short of the projected 1.9 percent increase. Consequently, the FTSE 100 index rose 48 points, or 0.6 percent, reaching 8,296 after a prior 0.5 percent decline on Tuesday.

In the corporate sector, British American Tobacco saw its shares increase by approximately 0.5 percent following a statement confirming their expectation to achieve low-single digit growth in both organic revenue and adjusted operating profit for the fiscal year 2024.

Primary Health Properties experienced a gain of over 2 percent, buoyed by its third-quarter update that revealed an additional £2.7 million in rental income.

Antofagasta shares rose over 3 percent as the Chilean mining company reported a notable 15 percent increase in copper output during the third quarter.

Additionally, Hammerson, a property development firm, saw a 2.3 percent rise in its stock following the announcement of a £140 million share buyback scheme.
