Walmart Reaches Settlement Pact Over Handling Of Prescription Opioids

Walmart (WMT) announced in a recent regulatory filing that it has reached a proposed settlement regarding three lawsuits initiated by shareholders concerning the company's distribution and dispensing of prescription opioids. The lawsuits, brought by three Walmart shareholders in the Delaware Court of Chancery, accused certain current and former directors and officers of breaching their fiduciary duties by inadequately monitoring the company's management of prescription opioids.

Under the settlement's terms, Walmart is to receive $123 million from insurance carriers, a sum that does not account for attorneys' fees and expenses that the court may award to the plaintiffs' counsel. Furthermore, Walmart has agreed to implement specific corporate governance practices for a minimum of five years as part of the settlement agreement. It is important to note that the settlement does not entail any admission of liability, and the defendants have explicitly denied any wrongdoing.
