Waffle Products, Cheeseburgers Recalled For Listeria Concern

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for certain products from TreeHouse Foods Inc. and Dakota Tom's Sandwiches due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause the severe infection known as listeriosis. This organism poses significant health risks, particularly to young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals might experience short-term symptoms like fever, headache, nausea, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

The recall from TreeHouse Foods affects an array of frozen waffle products, including buttermilk, homestyle, blueberry, chocolate chip, and multigrain varieties. These products, marked with various UPC codes, lot numbers, and best-by dates, were distributed across the United States and Canada under different brand names. The issue was identified through standard testing procedures at the manufacturing plant.

Similarly, Dakota Tom's Sandwiches has recalled several products such as the Pepperjack Cheeseburger, Bacon Cheeseburger, and The Gambler sandwich. These contain burger patties from BrucePac, which had previously recalled approximately 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The affected sandwiches are identifiable by their UPC codes: the Pepperjack Cheeseburger (UPC 737296806008), The Gambler (UPC 737296601788), and the Bacon Cheeseburger (UPC 3729680300), with best-by dates ranging from September 1, 2024, to November 23, 2024. These products were distributed in grocery and convenience stores across South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wyoming. Dakota Tom's has since ceased using ingredients from the impacted BrucePac facility.

To date, there have been no confirmed illness reports linked to the recalled products. Customers who purchased the recalled TreeHouse Foods items may return them to the point of purchase for a credit. Dakota Tom's customers can either return their products for a full refund or dispose of them safely.
