Chicago Business Barometer Unexpectedly Slumps To Five-Month Low In October

MNI Indicators unveiled a report Thursday highlighting an unexpected decline in business activity within the Chicago area, dropping the index to its lowest point in five months as of October.

The report reveals that the Chicago Business Barometer, according to MNI Indicators, fell sharply to 41.6 in October from 46.6 in September. A reading below 50 signifies a contraction in activity. This result defied economists' predictions, who had anticipated a modest increase to 47.0.

This unforeseen decrease has brought the barometer to its lowest figure since May 2024.

The significant downturn in the Chicago Business Barometer is primarily attributed to the production index, which plummeted by 7.8 basis points to its lowest level since April, with nearly 40 percent of businesses reporting reduced production levels.

In addition, the indexes for new orders and order backlogs fell by 4.6 points and 8.5 points, respectively, both reaching their lowest levels since May.

MNI Indicators also noted a decrease in the employment index by 5.5 points, indicating that over 90 percent of respondents reported either stable or reduced employment levels.

Regarding inflation, the prices paid index eased by 7.0 points following a peak in September, marking the highest level since August 2023.
