Walmart Inc., the retail colossus, has initiated a recall of its Marketside Fresh Cut Cucumber Slices. These slices, which may have been made using whole cucumbers supplied by SunFed Produce, LLC, could potentially be contaminated with Salmonella, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalled cucumber slices, produced in select Walmart locations, were available at 34 stores throughout Texas. The supplier, SunFed Produce, based in Rio Rico, Arizona, had recently recalled its whole cucumbers after the FDA linked them to reports of salmonellosis cases spanning October 12 to November 15.
Salmonella is a harmful organism that can lead to serious, sometimes fatal, infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with Salmonella often experience symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. In rare cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream, leading to more severe conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
This recall by Walmart specifically concerns Marketside Fresh Cut Cucumber Slices with an average unit weight of 1.5 pounds, a UPC/PLU code of 62969, and all date codes up to December 1, 2024.
Consumers are advised to discard or destroy the affected products or return them to the place of purchase. Additionally, they should thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces that may have been in contact with the recalled cucumbers to prevent cross-contamination.
Earlier this week, Baloian Farms of Arizona Co., Inc. recalled all sizes of whole fresh American cucumbers due to similar Salmonella contamination concerns. Russ Davis Wholesale, based in Wadena, Minnesota, also recalled several products containing cucumbers sourced from Baloian Farms.
