Stellantis And Zeta Energy To Develop Lithium-Sulfur EV Batteries

Stellantis N.V. (STLA) and Zeta Energy Corp. have formalized a partnership through a joint development agreement to advance battery cell technology specifically for electric vehicles. This collaboration intends to innovate lithium-sulfur EV batteries that boast exceptional gravimetric energy density while maintaining volumetric energy density on par with current lithium-ion batteries.

This advancement suggests the creation of a substantially lighter battery pack that offers equivalent usable energy as today’s lithium-ion batteries, thus facilitating extended range, enhanced driving dynamics, and improved overall performance. Furthermore, this new technology holds the potential to enhance fast charging capabilities by up to 50%, greatly enhancing the convenience of electric vehicle ownership. Notably, lithium-sulfur batteries are expected to incur less than half the current price per kWh compared to lithium-ion batteries.

Remarkably, these batteries will be manufactured utilizing waste materials and methane, leading to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to any existing battery technologies. The partnership encompasses both the development phase prior to production and the strategic planning for subsequent production processes. Upon successful completion, these innovative batteries are slated to be integrated into Stellantis electric vehicles by 2030.
