U.S. Consumer Confidence Unexpectedly Deteriorates In December

In an unexpected turn, consumer confidence in the United States saw a decline this December, as revealed by a report from the Conference Board published on Monday. The consumer confidence index fell significantly to 104.7 in December, down from a revised 112.8 in November.

This downturn came as a surprise to economists, who had predicted an increase in the index to 113.0, up from the initially reported 111.7 for the previous month.

Dana M. Peterson, Chief Economist at The Conference Board, commented, "The recent recovery in consumer confidence did not hold in December, as the index returned to the middle range it has occupied over the past two years."

Peterson noted that the dip was due to diminished consumer assessments of both the present situation and future expectations, with the latter experiencing the most significant decrease. According to the report, the expectations index—which gauges consumers’ short-term outlook on income, business, and labor market conditions—dropped sharply to 81.1 in December from 93.7 in November.

The present situation index, reflecting consumers' evaluation of current business and labor market conditions, decreased slightly to 140.2 from 141.4 in the previous month.
