Specifically, initial jobless claims fell to 219,000, marking a reduction of 1,000 from the prior week’s unchanged figure of 220,000. This outcome defied economists' predictions, who had projected an increase to 224,000 claims. Additionally, the less variable four-week moving average rose slightly to 226,500, up by 1,000 from the previous week’s stable average of 225,500.
