The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated an investigation to evaluate Google's influence within the search and search advertising sectors, examining the implications for both consumers and businesses. The inquiry will determine whether Google holds a strategic market status (SMS) in the UK regarding these sectors and will simultaneously consider the potential imposition of conduct requirements, contingent upon a final designation ruling.
The CMA emphasized that the investigation will prioritize engaging a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including advertising agencies, news organizations, and user groups. Furthermore, it will involve collecting evidence directly from Google, all before reaching a conclusion by October 2025.
