In January, consumer prices in South Korea increased by 2.2 percent compared to the previous year, according to Statistics Korea, a figure that surpassed the anticipated 2.0 percent and accelerated from December's 1.9 percent. This marks the first instance in five months where the annual inflation rate has exceeded 2 percent. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, inflation rose by 0.7 percent, surpassing the expected 0.4 percent, which would have remained constant. The Core Consumer Price Index (CPI) saw an uptick of 0.5 percent month-on-month and 1.9 percent year-on-year, an increase from December's figures of 0.1 percent monthly and 1.8 percent annually.
