Australia Imports Hit Record Peak

In February 2025, Australia's importation of goods experienced a 1.6% increase from the previous month, reaching a historic high of AUD 39.34 billion. This growth reversed a previously revised 0.4% decrease. The acquisition of consumption goods expanded by 1.2%, amounting to AUD 12.23 billion, primarily driven by non-specified consumption goods, which saw a 5.3% rise. Additionally, textiles, clothing, and footwear observed a 0.8% uptick, along with food and beverages intended mainly for consumption, which also increased by 0.8%.

The import of capital goods showed a notable gain of 3.6%, totaling AUD 9.05 billion. This increase was significantly bolstered by a 31.4% surge in non-specified capital goods and a 0.9% rise in telecommunications equipment. Furthermore, the importation of non-monetary gold surged by 15.0%, reaching AUD 1.17 billion.

While the importation of intermediate goods and other merchandise exhibited stagnation, it still grew to AUD 16.90 billion. This was attributed to a 16.1% increase in processed industrial supplies not elsewhere specified and a 7.3% rise in other parts of capital goods. However, this was offset by a decline in imports of fuels and lubricants, which fell by 14.8%, and organic and inorganic chemicals, which decreased by 8.6%.
