China, EU to Restart EV Tariff Talks Amid U.S. Trade Moves

China and the European Union have reached an agreement to resume discussions on electric vehicle (EV) tariffs, a development that follows the announcement by Donald Trump of additional tariffs. According to China's Ministry of Commerce, these negotiations aim to enhance collaboration between Chinese and European businesses and will commence shortly. This decision comes in the wake of Trump's imposition of a 34% tariff on Chinese goods, a 20% duty on European Union goods, and a 25% tariff on global automobile imports. Trade tensions have been ongoing, with the EU increasing tariffs on Chinese-manufactured EVs last year: 17.0% for BYD, 18.8% for Geely, and 35.3% for SAIC. These three automakers contested the tariffs in the EU Court of Justice earlier this year. In a bid to find alternative solutions to tariffs, China and the EU explored the possibility of implementing minimum price requirements for EVs in November.
