Egypt Inflation Rate Above Forecasts

Egypt's annual urban inflation rate rose for the first time in five months, reaching 13.6% in March 2025, up from 12.8% in February. This increase exceeded forecasts, which predicted a 12.6% rise. A significant contributor to this acceleration was the rise in food prices, which increased to 6.6% from February's 3.7%, marking the lowest level since May 2021. Inflation also upticked in sectors such as housing and utilities (13.0% compared to 12.9%) and clothing and footwear (23.0% compared to 22.7%). Conversely, inflation rates slowed for transport (33.9% from 34.3%), furnishings, household equipment, routine maintenance (15.6% from 16.6%), communications (12.4% from 12.5%), recreation and culture (19.7% from 22.0%), restaurants and hotels (15.0% from 17.6%), miscellaneous goods and services (15.0% from 15.5%), and alcoholic beverages and tobacco (25.0% from 25.4%). On a monthly basis, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 1.6% in March 2025, marking the largest increase in six months, following a 1.4% rise in February.
