Dutch Consumer Mood Falls to 17-Month Low

In April 2025, the consumer confidence index in the Netherlands decreased to -37, compared to -34 in the previous month, significantly trailing its twenty-year average of -10. This represents the lowest level since October 2023, as consumers grew increasingly pessimistic about the general economic outlook. Specifically, sentiment regarding the economy over the past 12 months worsened to -64 from -59, and expectations for the next 12 months also dropped to -59 from -55. Additionally, perceptions of household finances deteriorated for both the past 12 months, which declined to -18 from -16, and the upcoming year, sliding to -8 from -6. Furthermore, the economic climate sub-index decreased to -61 from -57, and consumer willingness to spend weakened, falling to -20 from -18. On the other hand, views concerning the timing for major purchases remained stable at -34.
