On Tuesday, the FTSE MIB rose by 1.2%, closing at 37,888, surpassing other key European indices, driven by notable gains in the banking sector. Mediobanca led the way, climbing over 5% to a new record high. This surge follows the momentum from the previous trading session, as market participants weigh the prospects of Mediobanca exchanging its shares in Generali for a stake in Banca Generali. Should Mediobanca acquire Generali’s wealth management arm, it could thwart Banca Monte dei Paschi Siena's bid to take over Mediobanca. As a result, Banca Monte dei Paschi Siena's stock increased by over 4%, while Banca Generali saw a 2% rise. Other bank stocks also made gains, with Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit, and BPER Banca improving by more than 1.3%. In other sectors, both Leonardo and Telecom Italia emerged as notable performers, each adding over 2% during the trading session.
