New Zealand Credit Card Spending Flat in April

In April 2025, electronic card transactions in New Zealand remained steady at NZD 6.46 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis. Across various retail segments, there were increases in spending on consumables (up by 0.5%), hospitality (up by 0.2%), and durables (up by 0.1%). Conversely, spending saw a reduction in motor vehicles (excluding fuel), down by 2.9%, apparel, which decreased by 1.9%, and fuel, which fell by 2.2%. On a year-over-year comparison, total electronic card spending slightly decreased by 0.3% in April, continuing a trend of 13 consecutive months of declines following a 1.6% dip in March. This trend underscores ongoing challenges in consumer spending.
