In March 2025, Moldova recorded its largest-ever trade deficit, amounting to USD 659.1 million, up from USD 459.1 million in March of the previous year. This expansion in the trade gap is attributed to a decline in exports alongside a rise in imports. Export figures declined by 6.6% year-on-year, reaching USD 299.1 million. This was largely due to reduced sales to both CIS countries, which fell by 14.6%, and EU nations, which decreased by 9.1%. However, exports to other countries grew by 1%. On the other hand, imports surged by 22.9% to USD 958.2 million, primarily due to increased purchases from EU countries, which went up by 45.5%, and from other countries, which saw a 5.6% rise. In contrast, imports from CIS countries dropped by 25.1%. Over the first quarter of the year, Moldova's trade deficit widened to USD 1,737.6 million, compared to USD 1,233.5 million during the same period the previous year.
