In March 2025, South Africa's mining production experienced a year-over-year decrease of 2.8%, which shows an improvement from the 9.7% decline recorded in the previous month. This marks the fifth consecutive month of downturn in the mining sector, although the decline was less severe compared to February. Specific sectors such as PGMs showed a reduction in output by 9.9%, compared to a 24.3% drop in February; building materials decreased by 8.7%, compared to an 11.8% decline; and nickel production saw a marginal fall of 0.3% against a 2.1% decrease in the previous month. Conversely, several areas saw a rebound in production: iron ore increased by 7.5% compared to a 10.7% decrease previously; chromium ore rose by 5.4%, up from a 5.3% decline; diamonds had a 1.4% rise, countering a 12.7% drop; coal production edged up by 0.8% from a 4.3% fall; and other non-metallic minerals saw a 0.7% increase as opposed to a 4.2% decrease. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, March's mining output grew by 3.5% following a revised 4.1% decline in February. Overall, mining production for the first quarter of 2025 showed a decline of 4.5% when compared to the final quarter of 2024.
