Ireland’s Trade Surplus Triples in March

Ireland's trade surplus experienced a significant expansion, reaching €24.8 billion in March 2025, a notable increase from €7.4 billion in the same period the previous year. This impressive growth was primarily fueled by a 94.3% year-on-year surge in exports, amounting to €37.3 billion. The primary contributor to this increase was the dramatic rise in sales of medical and pharmaceutical products, which soared by 243.3% to €23.6 billion, making up 63.3% of total exports. The United States emerged as the leading export destination, accounting for 68.2% of the total exports, followed by the Netherlands at 4.4% and Great Britain at 3.4%. On the other hand, imports saw a more moderate rise, increasing by 5.4% to €12.5 billion. This was predominantly due to an uptick in purchases of medical and pharmaceutical products, which grew 175.4% to €2.6 billion, accounting for 21.1% of total imports. Imports from Great Britain increased by 4.4%, comprising 12.6% of overall imports.
