Bulgaria Current Account Deficit Widens to 16-Year High

Bulgaria recorded a current account deficit of €776.2 million in March 2025, a notable increase from the €142.2 million deficit observed in the same month the previous year. This represents the largest monthly deficit since December 2008. The substantial widening is primarily attributed to a marked rise in the goods trade deficit, which grew to €819.2 million from €257.9 million in March 2024. Additionally, the primary income deficit expanded to €523.2 million from €437.2 million, and the services surplus decreased to €458.7 million from €497.9 million. However, there was a silver lining, as the secondary income surplus—which encompasses remittances and other current transfers—rose to €107.5 million from €55.1 million, providing a slight offset to the total deficit.
