New Zealand New Dwelling Consents Slide in April

In April 2025, New Zealand experienced a 15.6% decline in the issuance of building consents for new dwellings on a month-over-month basis, amounting to a seasonally adjusted total of 2,418 units. This figure encompasses 1,148 stand-alone houses, 1,105 townhouses, flats, and units, 85 retirement village units, and 80 apartments. For the year ending in April 2025, the total new dwellings consented decreased by 5.2%, culminating in 33,554 units. In addition, non-residential building consents saw a downturn, with their annual value diminishing by 7.6% to $8.9 billion. The number of new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents reduced to 6.3, down from 6.7 the previous year, indicating an overall slowdown in construction activities.
