Sri Lanka Consumer Prices Fall the Least in 8 Months

Consumer prices in Colombo, Sri Lanka, fell by 0.7% year-over-year in April 2025. This decline represents a slower rate compared to the 2.0% decrease observed in the previous month. It marks the ninth consecutive month of deflation, although this particular drop was the mildest in eight months. The decrease in prices moderated for sectors such as housing and utilities, which saw an 8.8% fall compared to 9.3% in March, and for furnishing and equipment, which declined by 0.6% versus a 0.8% drop previously. Conversely, the decline intensified for transport, going from 6.2% to 6.5%. Meanwhile, certain categories experienced renewed inflationary pressures. Prices for restaurants and hotels increased by 0.4%, recovering from a previous 0.1% dip. Food and non-alcoholic beverages experienced significant growth, rising by 5.2% compared to 1.3% earlier, and alcoholic beverages and tobacco also saw an increase, up 3.4% from 1.7%. On a monthly scale, consumer prices rose by 0.8% in April, rebounding from a 0.2% decrease in March.
