Indonesia Trade Surplus Smallest in 5 Years

Indonesia experienced a notable contraction in its trade surplus, dropping to USD 0.15 billion in April 2025 from USD 2.72 billion in the same period the previous year. This figure fell considerably short of market predictions which had anticipated a surplus of USD 3.04 billion. The current trade surplus is the smallest since April 2020, a month when the nation last encountered a trade deficit, primarily due to a substantial increase in imports. During this period, exports grew by 5.76% year-over-year, marking the 13th consecutive month of growth, aligning with market expectations and accelerating from a 3.16% rise observed in March. Conversely, imports surged by 21.84% compared to the previous year, greatly exceeding the projected increase of 7.75% following a 5.34% growth in March.
